A couple interesting tidbits:
  • Corey Hawkins (who played Dre) is a Julliard-trained actor more experienced with doing Shakespeare than hip-hop.
  • Jason Mitchell (Eazy) almost wasn’t in the movie because Mitchell was too broke to buy a plane ticket to go to his callback audition, so he auditioned via Skype (and got the part).
  • When Ren complained about not being featured enough in the trailers, Universal actually made new trailers with more of him in them.
  • F. Gary Gray made the actors re-record the entire “Straight Outta Compton” album in their own voices, so they could better get into character.

black women are the only ones who have a problem with this movie and it's driving them crazy that it's a success. :camby: no other group is hating on this film bytch :pacspit:
One, there are a bigger majority of black women who enjoyed the film. Secondly, there are a couple women who have issue with dre not being taken to task, stop making it seem like it's some consensus

I haven't heard any real backlash from Black Women overly criticizing the movie.

I hope Easy's actor has the same type of support Lupita got for 12 Years A Slave. He deserves a nomination.

F.Gary Gray also deserves consideration for his direction .

I thought the movie was good, but this is not the kind of movie that should heralded as black greatness. Just like Denzel should not have gotten an award for training day. It's a back door insult and we should wake up and see it that way.

I think the point is that the success of this film shows these Hollyweird fakkits that YES, people DO want to see OUR (Black peoples') stories and will turn out in droves to do so. I saw it twice over the weekend and both times there were AMPLE old white couples in the theater (I'm talkin', like, 60 years old and such).
Yeah i seen older white people coming in too. Mostly the theatre was filled with whites and mexicans with their n.w.a shirts on and 'compton' snapbacks on. they love us
:blessed:
:pachaha:
There were prolly less than 10 blacks in that showing i was in.

I would rather this get an award than all the slave movies they force on us year after year.

People who don't understand nwa aren't from LA. Everything they did was a reflection of what was going on during that time in Los Angeles. Much props to NWA, I haven't seen the movie but regardless they're one of the best to do it.

They started this gangster shyt and this the thanks they get?

I think you’re onto something here. :pachaha:

I saw the very first showing on Friday, skipped work and went dolo, lol….and the whole theater was packed and it was only about ¼ Black folks….the rest was OLDER white folks and younger white kids.

Saw it again Saturday afternoon around 5pm….more Black folks that time, but still it was half and half.

I can't even NAME a Hollywood movie that exemplifies "Black Excellence" without civil rights or slave narratives.

I mean, this is a biopic, not a fiction piece.....they can't all of a sudden change their story, lol.

I could see your point if this was fiction, but they're just telling their story....
