According to Rollingstone, Madonna is a better songwriter than Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes.

Madonna is listed above Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye and the likes:mjlol:

Not only that, Bill fukkin Withers apparently has nothing on Taylor Swift because he isn't one of the 100 greatest songwriters ever.
she has bigger records... lets take race out of it.

Now if she was over Smokey, it would be a problem.

Breh it's Rolling Stone.

These lists are solely generated to make people mad :yeshrug:
I don't even bother looking at those lists.
They're made specifically so that people make posts, blogs, and articles expressing outrage which all results in clicks of the list on their website.

This one is at least interesting because it looks a lot more like the old Rolling Stones lists you'd see, before the recent writers changed things. The list is predominantly full of older artists and writers with Bob Dylan being in his traditional #1 spot, which wouldn't happen if this was written by the people who do their half ass hip hop lists. There is no random "let's put Megan the Stallion here for clicks" moments either. They also don't shy away from controversial or cancelled figures, who happen to be great songwriters. Morrissey, R Kelly, and Kanye are included for instance.

My non-personal criticisms: Marvin Gaye should be significantly higher, as should James Brown. Prince should be significantly higher. Both should be in the top ten and Prince should probably be #2 in my opinion. Billy Preston should also be on the list as well, given how many Beatles are listed separately. And Elton John should be higher too.

My personal criticisms: Walter Becker & Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) made better music and wrote better songs than a lot of people on the list and should be higher. Bjork would be higher if I was making any music list. And while I get it's about songwriters (lyrics) I still think it's wild to make any list about writers and NOT include Miles Davis or John Coltrane who influenced virtually everyone on the list.

Pretty reasonable list to be honest. You can quibble with slotting but hard to say anyone doesn’t belong.
People need to prepare their anger for Taylor Swift to rise these lists dramatically in the future.

The thing is, future generations see articles like this as history. The guy wrote Lean On Me, Ain't No Sunshine etc, and is nowhere to be found. While 20 white dudes who wrote songs that were last heard of in 1978 are in there.

The average person doesn't give a shyt about music outside of whether they like it or not.

Smokey Babyface and R Kelly above Prince.

If my mom didn’t listen to her I wouldn’t really know much outside the 80’s and 90’s hits, I heard on the radio growing up, and…

Her antics kind of overshadowed her artistry. She’s a writer and can play multiple instruments (drums, guitar, piano, etc), and wrote/produced a lot of her own shyt.
