Controversial rapper Action Bronson will not be performing in Yonge-Dundas Square next month, a somewhat heavy-hearted North by Northeast festival announced on Friday.
The New York MC was scheduled to play the square on June 21 as part of a hip-hop bill free and open to the public during NXNE. But an online petition started on Tuesday by a woman named Erica Shiner arguing that Action Bronson’s music “glorifies gang-raping and murdering women” and asking that he not be allowed to perform in a city-owned public space had drawn nearly 38,000 signatures by the end of the work week and finally convinced the festival to capitulate.
