I always hated this criticism of the show.
His face does take some getting used to 
James Gandolfini was supposed to play Nucky Thompson cause they look alike however they changed their mind and they didn't hire James Gandolfini for this role because they didn't want it to be compared to the Sopranos.

He was the next one line to be Walter White, and I don't think he could have done anywhere near as good a job as Cranston. Great actor but I agree, weird looking and the Con Air pedo role was too creepy for me as a kid.
