Back then they really had no choice. Guaranteed contracts didn't come into play until WCW started giving them out. The lure of more money for a lighter schedule is why Nash, Hall among others took the deals.
The wrestlers of the 80's early 90's were using any and everything to numb the pain, which is why so many are no longer with us.

I also agree with Austin that these guys are a new breed of athlete that go harder, and are more inclined to wrestle a riskier style.

I understand the numbing of the pain, but there are more and more surgical injuries than before. Even from the traditional wrestlers.

Without steroids and copious amounts of painkillers, it really is. Vince is used to people literally killing themselves for a check. Every wrestler from 1997-2003 has done the cocktail schedule. It's the real reason Angle had to leave. Lesnar was drinking a quart of vodka a day at one point.

And then they wonder how these guys get heart attacks. That damage doesn't just repair itself once you leave, unless you really really take care of yourself after. And we know post stardom depression. Probably did worse when back home, but now they're not working out as much.
