Self defense with a weapon is a last resort when you cannot get away from the situation.

I mean… unless dude and his brother were already beating him and he needed to stab then to get away I can understand… need more details to come out.

But from the info available, not a single punch or attack was initiated when the stabbing happened. Just two brother aggressively telling dude to leave the tent. They were literally trying to get him to leave… so self defense based on being unable to retreat doesn’t seem unlikely.
