She found other ways to discipline me and eventually the thought of letting her down became more effective than the thought of getting a "beating". If you got whooped with a switch growing up, all your family members got whooped with a switch growing up, and all your friends got whooped with a switch growing up then why would you grow up to believe getting whooped with a switch is wrong?
There are plenty of examples in this world of people doing things that you or me would think is crazy but they think its normal because they grew up in that culture/environment.
If it was so easy to disassociate yourself from something you were raised to believe then organized religion wouldn't be as big as it is throughout the world.
