It's my theory (soon to be my doctoral statement) that the reason why black people swap these stories is because we have to convince ourselves that our parents were not wrong.

Look, brehs. Half of us got these kinds of whuppins or worse ("blah blah blah I came out okay blah blah blah"), but the era of this being normal, acceptable punishment has been over for a good decade now. Saying that this is wrong is not condemning our parents' PAST behaviors. They were doing what they knew. Now we know better, so let's do better. If there is one thing that I do not miss from hood teaching, it's shyt like this.

I think this about a lot of the things my parents did. Don't try to criticize them to their face, either.

My dad--single father--is responsible most every good thing about me. But, he's not without his faults. But, I love 'em.

If you went to school with open wounds on your arms from lachings, then yes they would be in jail. Never remember seeing a kid growing up with visible open wounds on there arms from a beating.

There's ways to discipline a kid without leaving those sort of bleeding marks on them. That's unacceptable it's the kinda violence a kid goes through that makes them resent you as an adult because you got abused as a child. My pops used a slipper to spank me. By the time I was the age to where I was playing outside I would have rather got a beating than a punishment. Take all his dawn toys away and make him sit in a bare room for a week straight with nothing but a bed and he'll learn.

There's just better ways to teach a child consequences to their actions than excessive violence. If you're beating your child till they bleed there's something going on there. Maybe you enjoy beating them or there's some type of stress release.
