Do not question the perfect evolutionary balance of the ecosystem.

If the buffalo could simply stomp them out and be done with it, what type of predator would that make the African Wild Dog? He would’ve gone extinct milenia ago. But he is evolved to be evasive enough to avoid those stomps and tenacious enough to still maintain some level of attack. Each buffalo did what it was supposed to do. They made a few attempts to defend their calf, then beat a hasty retreat when it got too hot.

Smart.

Because if they were to stick around, twirling around in circles for an hour trying to defend themselves from the multiple attacking dogs coming from all sides, they’d soon find themselves exhausted and fatigued, unable to no longer defend themselves and too tired to run away, and THEY THEMSELVES will become the next meal - not just their calf.

In the wild, it is smarter to live to make another calf than to die defending one.
