That's just they're way of separating themselves from their Blackness.

Dominicans will be quick to say "Black = AA" when they're called Black, but then turn around and call Haitians "Black"

I have no issue with latinos who are proud of their black heritage. Panamanians to me seem more prideful of their African heritage. And with Dominicans its a mixed bag. I know some afro Dominicans uptown and in Queens who say they are black and proud of it and others who deny,deny,deny. We all black at the end of the day.

IMO, I think the reason for that is because a significant amount of Afro-Panamanians are actually immigrants from other Caribbean countries. Which means they aren't of Latin descent. Makes a big difference

So all these years my mom watching Amen and me watching Wayans Bros and the Fridays movies I always assumed she was AA. I found about Carlton be Dominican like 5 years ago. And now I found out fine ass Tatiana Ali is Panamanian. The power of media is a trip. Afro Latinos are dope as hell. I play soccer with these afro colombians from Queens. They are cool as hell and have some sexy ass sisters and cousins.

americans were the ones to embrace and take ownership of the word. And now the term is largely defined by AA culture. The terms colored,negro and black were all floating around the african diaspora. AA latched on to black and made it a thing going forward to the "black and proud"/civil rights movement of the sixties. Anything else is not keeping it 100
