A simply good hip hop/rap song is better than a great afrobeats/amapiano/afrohouse & I say that as a working DJ.

That being said current ... "good" hip hop/rap is stagnant compared to afrobeats but not as commercially dead as dancehall/reggae.

Its just mostly party music, and as a young African, the mood of the music mostly doesn't match nor capturr the socio political mood of most youth's, much like how early to mid 90's hip hop and reggae did to its core audience, or what Fela Kuti did or even Franco at times. It's turning into fast food music if it keeps this up.

Probably the current rap YOU listen to. I can definitely mess with Afrobeats, Soca, and dancehall in a good amount of settings. Funny thing though, the native Caribbean I work with often have some of the same complaints about that current music as general hip hop listeners have about hip hop. So in general, every genre is pretty much suffering in some way.

afrobeats works for commercial & pop purposes

hip~hop/rap is street

now that there is a more comfortable way to access the culture it is likely big business will deal with afrobeats preferably

the streets will still be where all waves start but that's a separate matter from business
