I made a few threads about this, this one being the more recent here:

Updating regarding my boss and PIP.

Long story short:
-I was hired as a SRE at a software company late January.
-My interactions with my boss were very abrasive. Limited emails.
-I was learning everything there. There was stress there given the environment.
-Three months in, he says my performance isn't up to par and gives me 15 action items out of nowhere to work on or else the next step would be a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan)
-I work on these and accomplish most of these, including working on call.
-After that, minimum contact from my manager.
-I started taking more ownership of tasks, including projects asked of my boss. Also helping teammates on tasks.

So my boss asks me to come in a room he is nearby. There he was with a Project Manager that has been there for a month and a half. He states that my performance is not where it needs to be and they are terminating me today. He mentioned that they have to focus on the mission and I will be receiving my final paycheck as well as paperwork regarding the terms and I would be getting severance.

I sat there stone faced, professional. I did not have anything to say other than when will I receive everything. I then closed my computer, gathered my belongings and left.

I thought that I was doing what was needed, but frankly given our interactions I seriously think he did not like me personally. The fact that he was a dikk was echoed by other teammates. Naturally I was the only brother on the team.

So I'm thinking...if this was performance based then I wouldn't be eligible for severance OR unemployment, so why did he mention I was getting this? Something is off about this and it leads me to believe that it is because of personal issues he has with me. This is an at-will state so he doesn't need a cause but it seems they need to cover their asses still.

Also there was NO HR representative present when this occurred. The only party there was a project manager. The person that was there in hindsight should have not been in there.

Another thing is that he told me the next step would be a PIP if my performance wasn't up to par. There was no feedback on that on the list he just told me to keep working on that and we would follow up.

I luckily have some of the limited emails an interactions between us, but I don't have anything I can present in terms of work unfortunately. This was all of a sudden. I'm still in shock. Not that it happened, but the fact that it just occurred. So next moves are interviews and studying for them. I luckily got a HR representative's number and email to go off of.

I'd love any advice on this and what to do moving forward, especially dealing with HR.

Despite the "performance issues" some corps still issue a lump sum severance pay that will be paid to you on regularly scheduled payroll/payday until exhausted. You may also collect unemployment bennies in conjunction with your severance pay. Double check with DEO.

Usually when you get a PIP, 90% chance you getting fired. Should've been looking the moment you were put on that.

In the meantime collect unemployment, look for a new job and work on what you were struggling with before.

I wasn't put on a PIP then actually. I did interview though and thought some things improved.

We got this Indian dude in on Thursday and it's Monday and they boot me.

They are probably going to try to run him into the ground too smh.

It was strange that there was no HR personnel when they let you go.

I know it sucks (happened to me last month), you just gotta move on. For me, the one good thing about my situation is that it's making me look into options that I hadn't considered before. Like being a contractor\freelance, different types of training, and career development. I'm trying to plan out my career, or at least the next few years of it.

That's usually the process. If you are fired, HR is usually there unless you are a contractor

Yep. Wasn't a contractor. Even when I was laid off due to a reduction in force from my previous employer I had an HR rep on the phone because it was remote.

Happens to the best of us.

Since you were fired you should be able collect unemployment the good thing about the situation.

I was like the only black dude also. Plus I was remote. My boss was an unqualified moron as well and didn't have a clue about the type of work we did. Ended up getting offered a higher paying job 6 weeks after getting let go anyways.

Something I've found is ALWAYS make sure you linkedin and resume are up to date and always stay abreast job postings. You never know when your job will be terminated, so you have to stay in the mix so to speak. One thing to be wary of, especially if you have a laid-back, cool job, is getting comfortable and neglecting your portfolio so to say.

They probably fired you because the Indian dude is cheaper
