After 5 months, I suffered a layoff.

Something I've found is ALWAYS make sure you linkedin and resume are up to date and always stay abreast job postings. You never know when your job will be terminated, so you have to stay in the mix so to speak. One thing to be wary of, especially if you have a laid-back, cool job, is getting comfortable and neglecting your portfolio so to say.

They probably fired you because the Indian dude is cheaper

Luckily people know I was searching and recruiters have been contacting me

yeah, I don't start my new job til jul 10, and I'm still over here trying to update my resume so that it accurately is updated for the new position when I start that.

Exactly. You never know if the current opportunity will fall through or a significantly better one will present itself. My big mistake was not keeping the best looking portfolio of websites I could muster.

I think my former manager skipped some corners in the termination. I have documentation where he said he would give me a PIP if my performance didn't improve.

The action items as well were not measurable.

To add that, he added a project manager in our termination conversation. This is confidential information between the manager myself and HR. HR was not present.

My former colleague from another role said I should consult with a lawyer to see if I have a case to get additional severance out of it.

Really not worth it in my opinion. You need to focus on getting a new job and improving yourself, a lawsuit--that you may not win--will not add anything. Unless you can convince co-workers to corroborate you probably have no case.

What's your opinion of hiring an attorney to perhaps extend my severance ?

Like I said , the PIP Is irrelevant if you're an at all employee.

I honestly don't have experience in this. I would defer to others on theColi who have HR insight or experience going through this.

I am just saying, you are going to spend some decent money, burn all your bridges (not like you have any but still..), and risk getting blackballed. If you were truly the victim of horrid discrimination, yeah I am usually one to say fight it, preferably class action, but if you just want to use a lawsuit as leverage or feel bitter, I would just move on instead. a$$hole bosses are really common and unless you can show systematic discrimination or HR faults, I don't see how you can win without a large personal cost financially and in time you should spend making your next move. Just my opinion, I am not in your position.

In the end, the only way you can escape this workplace BS is to do your own thing, but that has many risks as well (no guarantee of a paycheck). Good luck.

I was like the only black dude also. Plus I was remote. My boss was an unqualified moron as well and didn't have a clue about the type of work we did. Ended up getting offered a higher paying job 6 weeks after getting let go anyways.
Same story. Canned, only to join a prestigious company for 25k more. God works man, that's all i can say

For developers, always make sure you have your own website that looks great and you keep it up to date. That will be your go-to portfolio piece. I sort of neglected that when I got my last job, so I'm in the position of working on it now.

Sorry that u had to go through this breh, At this point I'd just try to find the silver lining and consider the severance and the fact that you're not in a toxic situation a blessing while I search for something else. I know you were in Austin, were u looking to find something else there or move to another city?

I'm intending to stay here. There's a lot of opportunity here and I want to take advantage of it while I can and while I'm in my 30s.

I don't foresee myself moving to the west coast though.

Yea between ATX and Dallas there's plenty opportunity. I'm planning on moving to Dallas, Houston or Atlanta... whichever city I can get a devops opportunity as I continue to sharpen my skills in the next year
