This reminds me of a interesting case study I read with another athlete Donald Thomas a high jumper who had limited experience and won the World Title soon after taking up the sport. It was in a section regarding the 10000 hours theory to master anything. It was Stefan Holm (5'11) an Olympic High Jump gold medalist (04) who from the age of 6 was doing the high jump and 22 years later he won the gold at the Olympics and his outdoor best was 2.37. Vs Donald Thomas (6'3) who was a Bahamian on a basketball scholarship in America and was asked to do the high jump as a joke because of his natural leaping ability. Jumped 1.98 on his first attempt and 2.13 on his third. Long story short within 18 months from taking his first high jump attempt he became World Champion (07) winning on a height of 2.35 but that was as good as his career got. It peaked all within 18 month. He did managed to get to a career best of 2.37 10 years after his first ever jump. He still competes till this day.


I know it's a useless bit of knowledge but remember if someone says to you about the 10000 hour theory to master anything you can always tell them this story.
