Mechanic: We noticed your check engine light is on :troll: tire pressure sensors arent working. That'll be $750 please :wow:

ChatGPT: Cap!
  • The parts cost $75-100 total
  • You can try to replace yourself, or go to the tire store for the cheapest labor possible. Youre looking at $200 - 250.

Dealership: During our 6-month inspection we noticed yoru engine might need a fuel flush. You should consider getting that done with us :troll: For a low low fee of $200 we can get that handled.

ChatGPT: Ducktales :duck:
Buy a bottle of Seafom off Amazon for $25, run it in your gas tank when 25% and refuel. You're good to go :ehh:

:blessed: AI def has its drawbacks but this aint one of em.

The fact that people can rip you off like that without fearing for their life is the biggest issue

All those DIY car maintenance tutorials have been on YouTube forever. That’s probably what the Ai is scraping the info from.

All that stuff is general maintenance. Easy stuff.

You don't need to be a technician or even be consulted on topping off fluids.

Even replacing air filters which dealerships and mechanics make hand over fist doing is basic stuff. Replacing headlights and tailights....yeah the manufacturers make them shyts hard to access but its still basic shyt.

You shouldnt even fall for that. It's when they start telling you there's engine problems, transmission problems, steering problems, cv joints, tire rods, axle issues that you need to be aware because they will take advantage of you.

At best they'll tell you your cv joint needs replaced and they'll tell you it's an emergency and give you a high price and chatgpt will say "it's a concern but not an emergency, here's the general price, time, part, etc"

Software tutorials are also fukked.

Google's AI Studio lets you operate any software by taking a screen shot of the page, telling it what youre trying to do and it'll guide you.

The problem is professionals are professionals for a reason; people don't troubleshoot.
:yeshrug:

My car was turning on and off and I asked chapGPT why and it gave me a lot of solutions, but if you don't have any idea about cars you're not going through all of that; you just want the answer now.

A simple video on how engines work made me check the air intake hose and I found a nasty crack in it. I Changed it and boom; problem solved.

I've done breaks, alternators and general maintenance just following YouTube tutorials/manuals but I know I'm not a professional or gonna move like one lol.

Also if you trust companies to make AI ethical; I have a bridge in terabithia to sell you
:wow:

also good for general home maintenance :manny:

a year ago it gave me a wild idea to use a leaf blower to get rid of dust between the metal plates in a bathroom heater and noted I should tape a large garbage bag around the heater to prevent dust from flying everywhere. I was like:leon:

But the thing is most people aren’t doing maintenance.

It’s when something goes wrong that they are looking for a fix. Yeah you may just need to clean your tank with Seafoam or it might be something else causing the issue.

Yeah it sucks you can’t trust a mechanic not to gouge you but ChatGPT is just giving you the he answer you want to hear. It can’t actually diagnose a problem

.depending on the the way its prompted it can diagnose a problem. i diagnoses some medical problems, coding problems, mis-configured software,

:ehh:
Whenever there’s issues with my car, I do the research on the possible issues
And when the mechanic says one thing that I may have seen, I try to see if it could be another issue

We go back and forth til he is certain then the price is whatever at that point

:hubie:

And if that doesn’t fix that, I always get the second fix almost for free:russ:

He hates it when I come in

LLM have their uses, that's 100% fact. No matter what anyone says.

But it's not 100% and can have mistakes, sometimes even crucial/fatal. The issue is the amount of money and resources going into it for possibly no equivalent return. It's going to hit everyone if it the AI market retracts heavily.

But yeah, it's future, being able to do loads of shyt yourself.
