aight. so in the traditional sense of the word "producer", dr. dre is that. right?

this has been a topic i've gone back and forth with recent weeks and months

from dr. dre bein' goat to havin' ghost producers and or a team of ghost producers etc etc

but if we go by the traditional meanin' of the word, a producer is 1 who shapes and molds the song into the final product and adds this or that or cuts that and this and also is like a coach in the way that he leads the artist(s)

now, i know dre doesn't always make the beats and in hip hop, the person who primarily makes the beats is referred to as the producer is the producer, but in the traditional sense of the word "producer", dre actually produces and helps craft the song and takes it to the next level, correct?

so i guess what i'm sayin' is, technically speakin', in terms of bein' a producer (shapin' and moldin' the talent and knowin' what to add and what not to add), dre is a producer in every sense of the word; the same way guys like thom bell, quincy jones and butch vig are

i was lookin' back at this old clip and lookin' at all the talent these guys had yet it was dr. dre who knew how to conduct and orchestrate that talent

(dre knew what it took to get the best out of these guys and that's how we got the chronic and doggystyle)

in the 90's he was my favorite producer, goat even to me. then in recent months after readin' bout this producer helpin' out and "ghost producers" i started thinkin', "maybe dre ain't really all he cracked up to be" but the truth of the matter is this, the definition of a producer is not solely a beat maker but more or less the person who assembles any and or all rather everythin' to craft songs/albums and make it a complete thought, theme, idea or project

producers are like coaches the way i see it now

guys like quincy jones didn't always "play" the music but knew who to get in there and what to tell them to do and how to go about accomplishin' the theme or idea and come up with a great and complete project

He is a producer. The guy who wrote the melody on his synth or whatever is a songwriter and keyboardist, the guy who did the drums is a drum programmer. Only to rap fans does "making beats" = producer

People like to focus on the Deathrow days but that album to me is Dre's most rugged piece of work from front to end







He also put some serious work in DOC's album.







Both of those albums are just as big of testaments to Dre's greatness as The Chronic and Doggystyle, if not more because he had less "help" than he did at Death Row.

But people love to blindly overrate The Chronic so...

i know i'm late but i heard this the other day on the radio when i was on my way to work

perfect time for the summer; the beat is clean and they sampled aaliyah

dre's drums and mixin' are truly somethin' else

i think i'mma go back and revisit that relapse album of eminem's that dre produced from start to finish back in 09'. i wanna see what i think of the production now and how the production has held up since it's almost been 10 years since it's release (7 years to be exact)

You're right he is still a producer by the general definition, but the word has a different definition in hip hop. The closest you got to that in many hip hop albums was just the labels A&R trying to get out a project the label would like. Especially since most albums had beats from at least 4-5 different dudes.

He is a music producer, but he is barely a hip hop producer. He is a producer, but not a "beat maker" nahmean

In some ways he's the same type of producer as, say, Big Daddy Kane

back in 09' when i 1st heard relapse, i felt like the production wasn't all that but now in retrospect after revisitin' the album, the production is actually pretty good

the production has held up really well in the years since it's released. it still sounds clean and unlike anything else that came out durin' that time period

Dr Dre is the Drake of production...If Dr Dre gets a pass for being a "Quincy Jones" i.e. not even making the beat, then Drake should get a pass for being "Milli Vanilli" i.e. just lip syncing other people's thoughts...

well, in dre's defense, when you go back and read the credits (with the exception of who produced exactly what on doggystyle) it's all there if and when dre has produced a song or not and whenever there is a co producer, the co producer listed as well

i mean, dre is a "producer". he assembles everythin' and oversees it all and calls the shots of how things should be. that's a producer

There are some interestings interviews with the session musicians (Colin Wolfe, Tony Green, etc.) which people should listen to.
