Well the thing is they've got a monopoly on that form of public transport, intercontinental.

In a city, if a taxi company or a bus company has shyt and overpriced service, you can just take the train or even buy yourself a car. You can't do that with intercontinental travel though. It's planes or nothing. Sure you can try a different airline, but they're all more or less the same. They have a shared monopoly on that form of travel, there's no realistic competition to air travel. So as customers we have to put up with it or just not travel at all.

I'd bet that domestic, short-range routes are a lot more competitively priced and don't take the customer for granted anywhere near as much as long distance and international routes

You just got me thinking... can people catch a ride on ships other than cruise lines?

i remember catching flights to Florida to visit my pops when i was a kid and always had a choice of a free meal …they used to ask like “do you want the chicken or the meat loaf” mind you this was coach on a 2 hour flight
