On a somewhat related note, this is also why I'm sometimes slightly annoyed when I see "first african american" label attached to folks who have some accomplishment. In one of the engineering buildings at my Uni in the sea of white faces on some placards on the wall about accomplished people from the engineering college, there is one black face with some details under it and how he was one of the first "African American" members of some board. This was accomplished back in the 90s not some like 60s after integration accomplishment which I think is more understandable.
On one hand, I feel good for the brother but on the other hand...why does it feel forced as if they want to just make sure they "have "diversity" and the focus is more on that than this man's accomplishments. I want to see more black folks achieve great things but at the same time just like with any other successful person, I want it to be because of the things they did instead of the mere fact they were a black person who did it. Its almost like saying "Thats pretty good...for a black".
Its like subconsciously playing into the the thinking that most people don't expect anything out of black people so its noteworthy when they are the exception to the supposed rule.
