when EVERYONE around you is bigoted and racist, it's remarkable when someone isn't, going against the collective zeitgeist of your "time" isn't easy to do, a lot of "great" minds couldn't do it, or were afraid to express their opinions contrary.

I just finished a book about Einstein that was written in 1919 when his theory was new and he even mentioned then how he was referred to as a Swiss Jew by Germans and a German man of science by the English before being labeled just a Physsict. The author of the book also would refer to black folks as the "African Savage" and anyone that was Jewish was referred to as of Hebrew descent beforehand.
