How do comics even work? Let's say I'm talking about Marvel.. It seems like there are 284757 different story arcs going on at the same time.. Is there like a definitive/vanilla series? Or is none of the stories the "official" or canon version? I hope these questions make sense :heh:

I always thought it was the original titles were the canon story... the amazing spiderman, the uncanny x-men, superman... that's the main story

then they all have numbers.. sometimes going from 1-300 (one version) then they might restart that idea (#1, but it's the 2004 version, not the 1968 version)

then all the spin offs are just spin offs (2099, past, special, blah blah blah)

It's like TV, breh.

It doesn't matter how many shows are on.

What are you watching every week?

One doesn't assume The Wire, Homicide: Life on the Street and The X-Files are set in the same universe. Different fans just watch the shyt every week.

But if you look closely enough..... they are in the same universe. :mindblown:

It's just not necessary for a fan of either of those shows to watch either of the other two to enjoy the shyt they like. Those shows may as well not even matter... or exist.

Il n'est pas difficile du tout.

get it? :manny:

Your question does not make sense but I think you are asking which stories are connected or not. In marvel all the books happen in the same universe except the ultimate universe or a what if story. In dc it is the same thing except they have earth 2. Your question about cannon is a different story because the issue of cannon comes up with eailer stories or in the case of dc when they reset there universe.

I THINK.... again I haven't been in to comics since middle school... but I think you are both right and wrong

they all happen in the same universe...

but for example... one spiderman has mary jane as the wife, another will have her with someone else.. another will have gwen stacy still alive.. another might have her be the wife... another...... etc etc etc

so while spiderman is happening the same time as x-men, which spider is the REAL definitive story??

lets not even begin with the different plots and restarts and how stories couldn't possibly all line up together..

I think they are all pretty much at random.. I doubt you could line up comic books and tell one large story.. they'd have to write them as such

but if someone wanted to know the one spiderman story, which series of spiderman would be known as the real version?

Everything that takes place in Earth 616(Marvel wise) is cannon, the other stories are like side arcs and spin offs that happen in between, on the side or from a different prospective.

As someone stated above, each individual story is like a TV Show, they have nothing to do with each other but while Spider-man is in NY fighting some bank robbers, the X-men could be off on some Island somewhere fighting Cyclops and his goons. Characters regularly cross paths tho

There's usually 1 big story a year where everyone comes together and it affects each different character's story in some way, and those individual characters stories usually in some way affect the big story.

That's what I mean, though.

There IS no "Real Version", because the issues and books don't follow a definitive day by day timeline. It's not static. The only real version is the one you're reading at the moment.... until they put out a rough timeline in the future.... which they're prone to doing from time to time. And even then said timelines only cover major events.

Look at all the books Wolverine appeared in THIS WEEK. Is he slugging it out with Daken and Grim Reaper? Is he picking up the kidnapped kids from Arcade's island? Is he doing whatever the hell is going on in Savage Wolverine?

The only definite way to say a story is the "central" story is if it's the one you're reading and keep up with. And by "Definite", I mean "Matter of Opinion".

Yep. All stories are real and are happening. Marvel use to be real good at telling when a story happening in there editor captions they stop doing that by the early 2000s when that six issue story arc format took over.
