bruh helped carry hip hop on his back as far as the mainstream went for a long time and not in a pop way, but in a true to the essence of hip hop kind of way

i give jay z a hard time sometimes but in reality, he's a top 5 mc of all time and one of my favorite mcs

The thing about Jay Z is he's quickly approaching that point where he's been average or even bad for longer than he's been good.

When that happens, sometimes you need to make some room for others who are putting out great music as well.

but you know, i don't think you can judge an mc on his post prime years. every piece of music jay does now is just extra icin' on an already made cake

like for an analogy. nobody judges michael jordan for his time with the wizards. we remember his peak and prime years with the bulls

back to jay z. i was listenin' to some of magna carta earlier today and ever since that album came out, i'd trashed it. i didn't think much of it at all

but today, i saw it in a different light. i don't know if it was because the sun was out and the weather was nice but jay didn't sound half as bad as i once said he did

he had some nice songs on there. nowhere near his prime and peak years but still nice nevertheless :manny:

How is Common & Black Thought (both in my top 10) are more legendary than Jay tho? :upsetfavre:

Breh 80% of those names might help pioneered this hiphop shyt but not necessarily better than Jay tho.

Just give Jay his due, u sound like a scorned hater :francis:

I just don't see a negative in releasing music when the artist is older.

In sports it's more of a travesty to see somebody hold on to their glory days because it is more about destroying competition and at their age it's just not feasible.

With music though, I think adding more to your catalog adds to your legacy, even when the days of your youth as well as that of your core fans' is gone.

I see this trend more so with other genres of music, and do think hip-hop should be treated the same. If you act like it's all only about sales as a fan, then I think it's missing the point. Let the artists worry about the sales, not you.

Like right now, I'd want nothing more musically aside from a new MJ album than a new ATCQ album and now we'll never get those. If Jay-Z decides to release more material, I don't know why that should be used against him.

Common is a chi legend meaning he's King of the Chi in the underground and almost King mainstream

When like water for chocolate dropped Common got way more play in my high school while jay z had a minor radio hit with ain't no nikka video , people didn't pick up on reasonable doubt till years later
Common is more respected in the hip hop community as well as Black Thought because they represent all the 4 elements and Jay z just reps the mc element

Plus common and black thought are better rappers

And yes 80% did pioneer hip hop and they all have bigger classics than Jay Z

I don't understand this. Since TBA he's had what? 4 projects?

AG is great, still.
KC was what it was
BP3 was good.
WTT was great.
MCHG was what it was.

Prior to those? RD V1-3 Dynasty, TB

Where are all these bad projects?

i'm talkin' about the way he rapped and rhymed. jay went for a more glossy style per say and in particular with the beat choices (plus, times changes) but the rhymes at the core, was still hip hop

when i think of pop rap acts, i think hammer and vanilla ice and jay z damn sho ain't never been that bullshyt

Pop rap is anything that conforms to the mainstream , the opposite of hip hop

Like KRS said there's a difference between rap and hip hop
