Jay Z was pound for pound the best rapper in the world from i'd say 1996 to 1999. He had NYC on LOCKDOWN. I miss Ice water in the veins Jay but you can't maintain that level of inhumane behavior for too long.

96...Nas and PAC
97..Biggie obviously :dahell:
98..Nas and Pun
99...Em

He's still top 5 though.

He's garbage. Always riding whoever was hot for exposure. RD is great but the rest of his albums I NEVER listen to. Easily the most overrated rapper of all time. Plus he's a known bytch and I can't respect that either.

fukk Jay Z

Can't argue with @stomachlines. Jay one of the most incredible MCs ever and had the most impressive career out of all the GOAT level MCs. And when I say career, I'm not just talking about his discography. I'm talking about tours, sales records, music ventures...

Nas the GOAT tho :smugfavre:

Juan Roberto's bald spot
Jay got a bunch of faults but he is undeniably a great hip hopper. Listening to The Takeover ex post facto is a revelation. All that celebrity all that wealth all that commercial success...and he goes and does a battle track, not a beef track that we had all become accustomed to in the 90's and aughts but a good ol fashioned braggadocious battle track. The man was literally breakdancing in his magnum opus, he proudly declared his hip hop bona fides and was secure enough to openly challenge other great rappers (he may have lost but that's beside the point). In a way it is similar to The Bridge Is Over, and for that he deserves to be mentioned among the greats. :blessed:

Not to mention he also managed to squeeze out whatever talent was left in Nasir :lolbron:

Jay is somewhere between 6-9 and my top ten list. With KRS, Biggie and Pac.
Prodigy was still better between 96-99 though :yeshrug:
Jay on RD was as good as any rapper has ever been though :wow:

Jay is one of my favorites of all time, but responses in this thread are what pisses me off when it comes to talking about him. People act like he HAS to be in your top 5. There was a time when a LOT of people who posted put Common above Jay and weren't laughed at. It wasn't always seen that way. Revisionist history

I don't know. He acheived his top spot because two dudes died. When those dudes were around, he wasn't anything close to being a star. Its how Ja Rule got his spot too. So many cats benefitted from Big and Pacs death that it really changed Hiphop.

:mjlol: @ this nonsense.

like water for chocolate came out 3-4 years after rd, and jay happened to be one of the biggest rappers in the world at that point when that album dropped, but in your small bubble common was bigger then jay :russ:

one day it will all make sense , yeah common was bigger at the time
