Article is a longish read but Pretty much spot on. The writing really holds this show back from being great.
Simply Put, 'The Walking Dead' Needs To Focus On Being Less Stupid
Here's some of it.
"There’s something called the “willing suspension of disbelief” when we consume fiction. That usually means we overlook some logical or factual inconsistencies for the sake of enjoying a story. In this case the “suspension of disbelief” is that that it is literally physically impossible for corpses to rise from the dead and function without brain activity or blood flow or most organs or muscles. It’s literally magic in a world that otherwise has zero magic in it. But zombies are zombies, we accept that they exist and move on.
But where you have to draw the line is when
within the context of a fictional world, that characters do things that don’t make sense given the situation. You cannot explain away
every logical inconsistency with “suspension of disbelief” as at a certain point, it’s just bad writing and direction. We saw
so much of thislast week alone in
The Walking Dead it’s hard to even know where to start. Here are the kinds of things I’m talking about that ended up consuming the entire conversation about
The Walking Dead last week in particular.
- If Rick’s primary goal is without question, to kill Negan and spare everyone else if he can, why then did he not have a sniper positioned to take him out on the balcony as soon as he stepped out there, when we saw two lookouts easily sniped minutes earlier?
- If Dwight is an ally and presumably the group wants to get Eugene back unharmed, why open fire on the balcony group with a bunch of inaccurate weapons?
- Why did Daryl need to blow up barrels of explosives when the zombie hoard would have easily followed the blaring sound of his motorcycle engine like they’ve done in the past? Why do so when a war is coming and those explosives could be used elsewhere?
- Why did the group need to shoot out the windows to create noise to attract the zombies when Daryl was leading them there anyway? Why do that especially when the grand finale was blowing up the trailer which would attract literally an entire state’s worth of zombie by itself?
- How did the zombies follow the road so quickly when they can do nothing but shamble slowly, yet the showdown looks like it lasts literally just minutes? They looked like they were moving as fast as Daryl’s motorcycle due to the editing.
- If Rick’s goal really was to offer mercy to Negan’s generals and the innocent people inside the Savior’s fortress, why fire blindly into the building which could hit anyone, and why blow up the fence and flood the place with walkers which could maul a ton of innocents?
- Why waste an ungodly amount of ammo breaking glass when this is an era when bullets are going to be the most expensive and rare commodity on earth soon enough?
There are fixes for these problems, for instance, Negan could have had the entire conversation with Rick through a slit in the door, knowing that he was a prime target for assassination, which would have eliminated that problem. The group also just could have used the Daryl/bomb plan and not opened fire on the building at all, which was totally unnecessary."
