New York closely followed by no one.

The fact that southerners love to compare the whole South with a population of like 150 million stretching from just south of NY to just east of Cali to just NYC illustrates this clearly.

Musically speaking, it's not even comparable when we count classics 90 % are probably from the East.

This is because NY had a stranglehold on Rap media and narrative until the Internet came into fruition.

Those are two I disagree with.

Gonna say FishScale for best album of past 10+ years and best diss song is No Vaseline

But tbh most of that is on point. Shows West Coast dominance when it really matters. Still voted East though.

honestly, West Coast interests me the most...just the sound and diversity in styles. from 2pac to Pharcyde, from Spice 1 to Too Short

but of course N.Y. defaults bc it was the birthplace

West Coast wins this easily. West coast not only birthed our own style, own culture and never dikkrode other regions to be accepted. We kept inventing new sounds a d never adopted the next regions sound in order to be relevant *coughs East Coast*

West coast started the independent grind, didn't rely on majors or radio play. Didn't dikkride dj's and play the payola game. Started gangsta rap, g funk, hyphy, turf, horror core, mobb music, jerkin, ratchet, pimp rap etc :manny:

the west coast's claim to fame is gangsta rap, which was a spin on philly's schooly d, who was also the first independent star.

g-funk was great while it lasted, but even with that, you can say that EPMD was the blueprint.

the rest of this stuff never really caught on. but I personally like mob music a lot.

New York closely followed by the South. The East birthed Biggie and Pac, Nas and Hov who are usually in most people's top 5 but the Souths mainstream run has been huge and going for over a decade now. The West was a challenger for only part of the 90s and can't really be considered for this conversation. Southern Rappers want the respect that NY gets for lyrics and NY rappers want the commercial success Southern rappers get but neither are envious of the West. This thread will Def be NY/east vs the South but the battle for third between the Mid West, West coast and Canada will be interesting too.

its not even close.

the south hasn't even surpassed the west coast for second place. when the west coast was on top, they carried a certain level of respect within the culture.

the south's mainstream run was great from say '96 to the early '00s. but once crunk hit, the south became a joke with a few gems sprinkled in here-n-there.
and the east isn't envious of the south's commercial success. the south doesn't really sell like that in general. other coasts just want their spins.

get that Kendrick chit out of there.

I can rock with the rest of this.

the west coast had a great 9 or 10 year run. but they lost their way after that. they gotta bring more to unseat the east.

Can't disagree with much of these besides best diss song ("No Vaseline") and best album of past 10+ years (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy personally). But I'd put TPAB over GKMC :/

Loud Records is mostly an East Coast label but you can't wrong with a label with Wu-Tang and Mobb Deep together:banderas: they're up there with the best

Its true

Swisha House, 3-6, Goodie Mob, Geto Boys, CM, NL , etc never got their due acclaim because NY media was only focused on propping up boring ass NY artist

media always propped up goodie mob & geto boys.

its not about east coast. its about the journalists' tastes(usually native tongue stylings & '90s boom bap). goodie mob fell in line with native tongues.
