Joe wasn't dink and dunk though. His yard per attempt is pretty good all time.
The large majority of his throws in the offense were short, it's just that the whole field was opened up so there was a ton of YAC. Also, Montana was always completing a high % of his passes, which gives you a higher yards per attempt even if your yards per completion isn't that impressive.

For example, in 1985 Joe Montana was 4th in yards per attempt, but only 23rd in yards per completion.

Roger Craig as a fullback caught 92 passes for 1016 yards in 1985, that's a yards per catch of 11.0 but you know those throws weren't 11 yards downfield, it's just that defenses were so spread out trying to guard the entire field that players would run wild after catching the ball. When you have a fullback who catches more passes than both your starting WRs combined, you ain't telling me that's a downfield system. Montana would occasionally shoot a ball deep to Dwight Clark, but that didn't happen that often and even then only because the defense had been so pulled in trying to cover everyone inside.

Later, getting guys like Jerry Rice and Brent Jones, the routes were so good and the receivers so strong that those guys kept piling up the YAC and making the yards per attempt look high even when the average pass wasn't getting that far downfield.

Fully aware of this being a Niners fan for over 30 years (yes, I'm :flabbynsick: ). But that's lot of qbs in general.

I'm with you man. The 1989 Super Bowl is one of the first NFL games I distinctly remember.

Montana in yards/completion by season

1980: 30th
1981: 27th
1982: 18th
1983: 22nd
1984: 12th
1985: 23rd
1986: 22nd
1987: 22nd
1988: 18th
1989: 12th
1990: 16th
1991: Steve Young takes over the offense and finishes 3rd in the NFL in yards/completion
1992: Young is 4th
1993: Young is 5th, Montana playing for KC is 12th
1994: Young is 7th, Montana is 22nd, Montana retires

Montana stayed in the bottom half of the league in yards/completion almost his entire career, and that's even including the YAC. Seven seasons where he was 22nd-30th and most of those were during his prime. Whereas Steve Young took over the same offense and was immediately top-5 in yards/completion.

Brady a system QB too. :yeshrug:

I ain't denying that guys like Montana, Kurt Warner, and Brady have fantastic accuracy, decision-making skills, chill under pressure. They were the absolute right guys for the systems they ran. But they were still system QBs. They all had contemporaries like Warren Moon/John Elway, Steve Young/Brett Favre, and Peyton Manning/Aaron Rodgers who could do more with the ball than they could have.

Yeah.

What's interesting is that Cam has the highest yards per completion of all active QBs :ohhh:

first of all, joe montana wasnt a 'dink and dunk' passer, really

second of all, theres nothing wrong with dink and dunk if the ball is moving and points are scored. the goal of passing offense is to not make turnovers and move the ball for a score. people who label qbs who settle for short passes 'system qbs' either dont understand football or trying to play football in a vacuum off sheer throwing talent. qb isnt about throwing.
