Withholding compliments and light put downs, i would accept when my self esteem was lower because I didn't want to seem like i couldn't take a joke.
I used to be attracted to men who I felt needed support, uplifting and healing because I was looking for reciprocity. Classic codependent. I felt useful even if not appreciated.
I've since put that focus helping and healing myself because I recognize that you will become drained/ burn out if you are constantly pouring energy into others and neglecting yourself. I pour into myself and whatever is left over or overflows is what I have to give. I have more to give now because I am never empty.
