Am I the only one who thinks Guru was overrated?

Overrated in what sense? Who's saying Guru is top 10 or anything like that?
Nobody said he was too 10 but you got shyt like this

And Guru has great songs that aren't Premo produced too. Guru was a great MC, lyrics, content, delivery, presence, he was extremely dope. Missed.

What are these great songs Premo didn't produce? Those Jazzmatazz albums were :trash:

The best songs on those albums had Premo production

Disagree. Guru dropped many gems, and his jazzmatazz albums had outside production and were dope:

Jeru was my favorite rapper for a long time, and yes he would have murdered the group home tracks etc, but can't say I'd replace guru with him.

He called himself "the king of monotone", so he knew how his delivery came off but that made him unique.

Moment of Truth is one of the greatest hip hop tracks ever made, and largely due to Guru.

RIP

The Jazzmatazz albums weren't trash and Guru had other shyt that was dope too. I don't have a list of production credits to hand but all these songs were great non Gang Starr songs...

Lifesaver
Living In This World
Count Your Blessings
Universal Struggle
Infinite
Cry
Too Slick
Feed The Hungry
Stand Up
Wait On Me
For You
Keep Ya Worries
State Of Clarity
The Jazz Style
This Is Art

And a bunch of others. I don't know how someone can listen to a song like Moment Of Truth and not see what Guru brought to the table there, yes it's a great beat but the lyrics, content, wisdom were all exceptional and a huge part of why the song is exceptional.

hmm he was monotone but I still felt he had a lot of energy in his tracks unlike say roc marciano and bad boy ma$e if we're comparing him with fellow monotone rappers

Sure Premo beats helped him a lot but they didnt carry him. He was pretty dope.
ATCQ are the best example of average mc's carried by production. Those guys were average as shyt
"I float like gravity"
"Its just me tip and ali for those who cant count it goes 1 2 3"
"Phife Dawg's my name, but on stage, call me Dynomutt"
"Drink a lot of soda so they call me dr pepper"

I dunno. Guru was a unique MC. I can't think of anything that was truly special or superior about him, but his lyrics stick with me. Tracks like Mass Appeal, Moment of Truth, Soliloquy of Chaos are dope because Premo's beats, but they're impactful and meaningful because of Guru's contributions. Maybe he wasn't a Rakim, but he wrote records with deep cultural meaning and social relevance that have stood the test of time.
