Amazon Releases (Not Many) Details On Its Workforce Demographics

Late to the table on disclosing workforce demographics, Amazon posted a diversity report to its website on Halloween, revealing that its global work force is 63% male and 37% female, while in the U.S., its work force is 60% white, 15% black, 13% Asian and 9% Hispanic. More lacking in granular detail than the less-than-transparent diversity data provided by its tech peers, Rainbow PUSH said Amazon's numbers were not as good as they appeared, and criticized the company for a lack of candor. "Their general work force data released by Amazon seems intentionally deceptive, as the company did not include the race or gender breakout of their technical work force," PUSH said in a statement. "The broad assumption is that a high percentage of their black and Latino employees work in their warehouses." Following the lead of other tech companies, Diversity at Amazon suggests the e-tailer's undisclosed-but-presumed lack of tech diversity could be blamed on "female students and students of color [who] are opting out of technology and engineering" as early as middle school and high school. Taking a page from Google's playbook, Amazon pointed to its involvement with the Anita Borg Institute, Code.org, Girls Who Code, and the National Center for Women & Information Technology as ways the company's addressing tech diversity deficiencies.

I doubt if they have any diversity
Diversity starts from how the initial company is set up , not years later when the workforce looks & acts a certain way .

I updated the post.
it still supports exactly my understanding of the culture at amazon. they have a terrible work culture that burns people out, and its one that clearly disproportionally adversely affects women, that fact that their workforce goes from 40% women in general to only 24% in management levels means they don't care about inclusion and retention of women.

as far as blacks in management, those are, sadly, good numbers for tech. there are plenty of tech companies where the black workforce in general doesn't reach 5%, so for them to have 6% in management actually surprises me. that 22% also shows a lot of us are working there in the dist centers, another reason to press them to treat (specifically distribution/warehouse) employees better.

In Atlanta, the amazon warehouse is in Jefferson, which is closer to Athens than it is Atlanta. Jefferson is about as white as you can get.


I guess if you have a car, you can drive to Jefferson to work but otherwise why bother.

1 typically managers and above are promoted from within in those type of companies , so the numbers make some sense.

Also you have to understand and this is general statistics, Amazon has actually better diversity for blacks in general that the actual population, if we are 12% of the population ama on employs 22% a big jump forward.

When you talk about management location and education comes to play. Seattle is 8% black (which is their main campus ) you take that and say how many of those are qualified to be manager and that number drops. Now amazon has other locations, hubs, and hq2 in new york but 6% doesn't scream anything negative at least to what you're trying to say.

22% are Asian which is indicative of what we already know. Asians are taking over and have for years been front runners due to being the ones taking advantage of going to Ivy League institutions and also being prominent on the west coast.

Amazon could tweak these numbers obviously but I don't see how you came how up with your assertions or conclusions

Amazon cannot sterilise women or force them to choose between their personal obligations and them.
The only thing affecting women is people who undermine their choices to be homemakers or have
a more balanced social life.
