Thanks for the info. No I didn't know they stopped Free App of the Day. I stopped fukking with their app store a while back, thought it was pretty pointless to have two app stores, when most shyt was on the Play store. I'll peep the differences with the shopping app though.

Amazon's Android App Store is also part of the Amazon shopping app from Amazon's website. So you don't even need to use the dedicated Amazon Android App Store app anymore.

The year 3030
:jbhmm: Damn so Goog Set would be taking 30% of that prime pie huh?

but I'd take a Prime Video-Only version of Instant Streaming like iOS has, if I didn't have to get into their own app store again. I don't buy/rent videos anyway.

anyone have the actual numbers of how many Fire TV's/Sticks have been sold vs the competition? No way is Amazon hurting in these sales to pull this move.

Apple TV Fell to Fourth Most Popular Streaming Media Device in U.S. in 2014

Thursday August 20, 2015 12:13 pm PDT by Juli Clover

The Apple TV was the fourth most popular streaming media device in the United States in 2014, according to new data compiled by Parks Associates. Sales of the Apple TV were eclipsed by sales of devices from Roku, Google, and Amazon.

Roku continues to be the most popular brand when it comes to streaming media devices, representing 34 percent of units sold, while Google and its Chromecast were responsible for 23 percent of device sales. Amazon's Fire TV was the third most popular choice, while Apple came in fourth. In 2013, the Apple TV was the third most popular streaming media device, but in 2014, it fell behind the newly introduced Fire TV and Fire TV Stick.

Combined, streaming media devices from Apple, Roku, Google, and Amazon were responsible for 86 percent of all streaming media device sales to U.S. broadband households.

According to the data, almost 20 percent of U.S. households now own one or more streaming media players. When it comes to ongoing usage, Roku devices are unsurprisingly at the top of the list. 37 percent of households regularly use a Roku device, 19 percent use a Google Chromecast, 17 percent use an Apple TV, and 14 percent use an Amazon Fire TV/Fire TV Stick.

With a new Apple TV on the horizon, the streaming media device market could shift in Apple's favor in 2015 and 2016. The new Apple TV is a radical departure from the existing Apple TV, which has not been updated for several years. It will include a full App Store that supports games and apps, Siri integration, a refreshed design and operating system, more storage space, and a touch-based remote control.

The Apple TV won't be able to compete with devices like the Google Chromecast or the Amazon Fire TV on price, but it will bring a host of features not offered by other products.

Now who else wanna fukk with Hollywood Court?
Yep. I've only had a chromecast too but my dongle broke off in the hdmi thing a few weeks ago. Pissed me off. Bout to just cop a roku 3 most likely. I want the remote headphones thing

The Roku 3 can't run Kodi, you're better off just getting a FireTV and some bluetooth headphones.

you can turn transcoding off
If you turn transcoding off you have to make sure your files are encoded in the right format and then you still need Plex Server to stream them. Why depend on a third party app running on your server when you can use Kodi which is NFS/SMB/CIFS compatible? This allows you to not even need a full computer to access stuff. You can plug a hard drive in a router and still get busy. I know Roku has other advantages, but for this AFTV + Kodi win hands down over Roku + Plex. Less setup and compatible with basically any device or operating system that can share files. :banderas:

Can you screen cast with firetv?

Yes, need a app on your phone called Allcast

Also, Amazon has started their own version of "Google Cast" or Airplay called "Amazon Fling":

Amazon Fling allows Android and iOS media casting to Fire TV

Amazon has announced a new SDK for developers called Amazon Fling which allows Android and iOS apps to “cast” media to the Fire TV. The Fling SDK also allows developers to build companion apps that remotely work with apps on the Fire TV. At its core, Amazon Fling gives Chromecast-like functionality to the Fire TV, but can be leveraged to do much more.

Amazon Fling lets mobile apps send audio, video, and images to Fire TVs connected to the same network as the mobile device. The SDK handles all the discovery and communication between the two devices, simplifying the process for developers. Amazon has gone a step further by providing developers who already use Google Cast in their apps with instructions to easily integrate Amazon Fling into their apps.

This new SDK isn’t only about sending media to Fire TVs. Developers can use Amazon Fling to send any communication between their mobile apps and Fire TV apps. Amazon Fling can even be used to remotely install the Fire TV version of an app from within a developer’s smartphone or tablet app.

Amazon has highlighted two apps already using Amazon Fling. The first is Karaoke Party which displays song lyrics and videos on the Fire TV. The app allows customers to use their smartphone as a microphone by sending audio captured on the smartphone, via Amazon FLing, to the Fire TV. The second app already using Amazon Fling is Rivet Radio which lets you listen to news on a mobile device or the Fire TV, and seamlessly transition between the two devices using Amazon’s new SDK. Rivet Radio achieves this with the new Fling SDK without even having a Fire TV app.

Amazon Fling capabilities are included in the latestFire TV and Fire TV Stick software update that has been making its way out to devices since the beginning of July.

Amazon.com removes all Chromecast, Apple TV, and Nexus Player listings on schedule

Posted on October 29, 2015

At the beginning of the month, Amazon announced they would stop selling the Chromecast, Apple TV, and Nexus Player through Amazon.com. Their official reasoning for banning these streaming media players was to “avoid customer confusion” since these devices did not “interact well with Prime Video.” In my opinion, it had more to do with Amazon using their retail leverage to sway Apple and Google into changing their in-app purchase policies. When announcing the new policy, Amazon said new listings for these products could no longer be created, which is why the new Apple TV and new Chromecast have never been available through Amazon. The largest online retailer also said existing listings for these devices would be removed on October 29th. That day is today and, as expected, the Amazon.com listings for the Chromecast, Apple TV, and Nexus Player have all been removed and replaced with 404 error pages. Searching for any of the removed devices on Amazon brings up search results devoid of the aforementioned products, but does produce a page with a banner at the top that takes customers to Amazon’s Streaming Media Player hub which features the Fire TV, Roku 4, Tivo Bolt, and other streaming boxes.

Notably, the Nvidia Shield and Razer Forge TV remain available for purchase through Amazon. Both of these devices run Android TV and provide the exact same user experience as the banned Nexus Player when it comes to viewing Amazon Video. The Nexus Player, while manufactured by ASUS, is as close to a Google product as you can get. The removal of only the Android TV device that was co-developed by Google is further evidence that Amazon is specifically targeting Apple and Google with this product ban.
