One of the saddest things that I've seen in recent history was a young woman who in a facebook comment responded to what i said about how the word slut was demeaning told me that she was proud of being a slut because she liked sex. This was a young woman too. What irks me is how you have some people who believe that they can call themselves words that demean them because they think they can "reclaim" a word yet they don't want to also claim or acknowledge the history of the word. They use the idea of the n word and the q word that recently some gay people use as a term of endearment. There is no empowerment in being ignorant towards history.

Sounds to me that the girl you're referring to wasn't trying to reclaim the word slut she just embraced the word for what it is and the behavior that it describes. A slut is a woman who sleeps around and if she sleeps around then she's a slut. What historical oppression is associated with the word slut? You making a false equivalence.

Amber totally ruined the original purpose of the Slut Walk. It was started because rape victims were being blamed for being raped because they were dressed a certain way. And a cop made a statement saying that women could avoid being assaulted if they didn't dress like sluts. Basically women were sick of victim blaming. Being told not to dress a certain way, or drink to much, instead of telling men not to rape women.
