AMD Announces Solon-Q: All in one VR headset

The growing virtual reality platform wars got a little more complex this morning. That's because graphics chip maker AMD has thrown in with Toronto-based startup Sulon Technologies to unveil the Sulon Q headset, which aims to provide a PC-based, fully tracked virtual reality experience without the need to tether yourself to a computer tower.

According to the announcement, that "wear and play" untethered design makes the Sulon Q quite different from competition like the Oculus Rift or SteamVR-powered HTC Vive, which both need a relatively high-end PC to actually generate the images on the headset. With the Sulon Q, the Windows 10 PC hardware is built into the unit, including an expected four-core AMD FX-8800P processor with a Radeon R7 graphics card.

If VR does go mainstream it will be with a device like this. Something self contained that you can just pop in and play when you want. Kinda like a console.

That other shyt, especially the vive, you need to dedicate an entire room to your VR experience. That will never go mainstream

Nah, I expect it to be underpowered. I don't trust AMD to make a good PC peripheral.

My Rift and Vive are good enough for me at the moment. I don't see this taking off. You can't fit a good cpu and gpu in a headset. I'm real skeptical of this.

Yeah, this is more like competing with the GearVR than the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. The GearVR is cool for very simple games (I've played with it at Best Buy), but it can't handle anything of substance. The R7 GPU in this isn't gonna be able to run modern games at 90fps like the Rift and the Vive hooked up to a fully fledged PC with a nice GPU.

This is only gonna work with real simple, non graphically intensive games. The R7 GPUs aren't anything to write home about. They're low level GPUs.

This'll be a gimmick and fail. Good idea, but it's not gonna be anywhere up to the levels of the Rift and the Vive. Now if they managed to put in a R9 Gpu, then it'd be a different subject completely.

I guess it's a start though, but count me out
