It starts at home with the parents, then moves onto the teacher and individual. We live in the information age and our attention span is much lower than before. Do you really think majority want to go through every article or source and decipher it. No one has enough time to do that.
I agree with others the responsibility should fall on media outlets but who's going to trust them when they are after what sells.
HOWEVER, I also used to be one of the people that thought questioning science is outrageous, until I worked in research during my masters degree...... let's just say that any scientist can twist and make numbers talk however they want.
The issue isn't so much that a scientist is disingenuous but it's the fact that the system itself is so complex that changing one small variable can give you a different conclusion. This is why you get scientific leaders in the case of coronavirus fail to make abrupt decisions and conclusions. The fact of the matter is that we don't know shyt. So when Dr Fauci changes his stance it probably means that the science evolved for him to come up with a different conclusion. Not that he's a liar and is doing it for politics.

i remember a teacher in high school wrote on the syllabus "contrary to popular belief, ignorance is not cool". that always stuck with me

You can't reverse it because it's mostly cultural. The poor and working-class don't like being talked down to and many of the intellectual elite are not good at being persuasive and mistakenly presume that being correct is enough...it is not. And this is especially relevant when it comes to public policy because the average person can quickly google an argument reinforcing their biases. But even if you get through the class and geographic barriers, America's racist attitudes will influence many white people's voting behavior. Thus, you'll likely always have a large portion of the nation that won't let go of their discrimination and biases to the degree necessary to place intellectualism on a pedestal.

What needs to be absolutely mandatory is a school class on media analysis where the people actually learn how to fact check and analyze what they read/hear/see online, on tv or wherever.
