Not aiming this at you:

That's what I figured - pining for the golden 40s. Liberally accepted #MAGA talk.

Sorry but any year before 68 is a wash to me.
That's a good argument if you're talking about inclusive success. But black people are a minority. So when he says majority of people, it means just that. The irony is that in attempting to prevent black people from prospering (and succeeding) America fukked over the entire nation.

Article:

Without a robust middle class, America is not only reverting to developing-country status, it is increasingly ripe for serious social turmoil that has not been seen in generations.
sort of a throwaway line there at the end, but imagine a couple more Trump textualists on the SCOTUS. The religious right is showing no signs of slowing down until Jesus shows up and if they had a supreme court that consistently upheld their crazy nonsense on social issues... look out

People keep getting hustled by these super rich. That sure was a great move heading towards that 'knowledge economy' where everyone can work 'service jobs' like making coffee at Starbucks. Meanwhile China is increasingly getting rich with the manufacturing jobs we used to have. If you just look at the trends of the numbers, 3rd world status is inevitable.

To make it simple...
Inflation, especially for rent and food. Stagnant wages = people getting poorer.

obscenely expensive 4 year degree to 'potentially' get an ok job = people getting poorer

no benefits and wage competition from open borders and h1b visa = people getting poorer

trillions of dollars in debt combined with all of the above = economic collapse.

What can we do?
We’ve been digging ourselves into a hole for over forty years, but Temin says that we know how to stop digging. If we spent more on domestic rather than military activities, then the middle class would not vanish as quickly. The effects of technological change and globalization could be altered by political actions. We could restore and expand education, shifting resources from policies like mass incarceration to improving the human and social capital of all Americans. We could upgrade infrastructure, forgive mortgage and educational debt in the low-wage sector, reject the notion that private entities should replace democratic government in directing society, and focus on embracing an integrated American population. We could tax not only the income of the rich, but also their capital.

Funny the banks got billions of free money from the tax payers but the tax payers can't ask for it back in debt forgiveness.

The median net personal income for Americans places them in the top 95% of global income. :beli:
By any metric, even people we think of as being working class in America, even people struggling with part time jobs, are well-off by global standards.
I think it's easy(particularly for those on the left) to lose track of how incredibly wealthy America is as a country, and how far down global poverty really extends.

"developing nation"? :heh:

So here's the problem.

In India let's say you get paid $2-3/hr (USD) after taxes in Jakarta and shyt and your rent is $40 (USD) a month. You can get by working a 40 hour work week and still have money left for food. In addition in India there are all sorts of side hustles you can do that you can't legally do here without expensive licenses. On top of this - In India you have access to your family extended network, in America we don't socialize with extended family (let alone immediate fam on average).

In America you get paid $10/hr after taxes in Ohio but your rent is $400 a month. Can you see how the math already doesn't add up?
