When do you believe the American empire was at it's peak/apex and when did the decline begin?

Imo, America became an empire in 1945 and the apex/peak was in the 1950s-1960s. The decline began in the 1980s.

I see how you're putting your timeline together and I would even look at inflation as a key way to examine the power of the country.

I could be wrong but wasn't the American dollar worth the most in the 40s and 50s? And has been on the decline since then?

The Ummah!
Peak probably end of ww2 up until the Reagan era. Decline from 911 onwards due to 1 bad foreign policy decision after another.

Not quite. That would probably have been the peak, but not the beginning of an empire.

Arguably, our imperialism began with Mathew Perry formally opening up JP for US trade (1853)and making it America's first client state. If you would like to define empire by outright control of foreign assets then a better arguement for a start would be the acquisition of the Philippines in 1899. :patrice:

Spain was the first victim of US imperialism and I'd mark the freedom of the Philipines in 1946 as the first sign of dismantlement in the US empire. This was also the point when the US defacto controlled the entire pacific ocean (except Australia) and the US momentarily controlled large swathes of North Africa after WW2 ended.

After 1946 the US went into power saving mode. It had placed most countries in check. I also agree with you on the US going into full blown hibernation in the 80s. By that point every man woman and child on earth was placed firmly in checkmate so there was no need for further expansion. This period is comparable to when Augustus succeeded Julis Ceasar. The pax-americana was in full bloom:wow:

It’s peak would have to be between 1985-2000. I say 85 ish because that’s when America basically solidified its dominance through computer technologies. That led to rapid innovations in almost every other field.

That was almost 15 years of solid progress in all areas. America during that time, especially with the fall of the USSR in 89 became the worlds cultural and economic power house. If you wanted to truly be successful you had to come to America at some point. It was never like that at any other point in the country’s history. History is going to tell a more complete story on 9/11 and how global policy became counter intuitive to America’s place in the world. That signifies the slow far you’re still seeing today. Trump is just the loudest sign of the fall, it’s been happening for 20 years.
