It could be they create some type of substance to repel them or they could maybe attract certain predators to counter act the insects who destroy trees etc.

When the first loggers start cutting trees for the day, the trees communicate through the forests' fungi network (where their roots are connected to also) that they're being harmed. Subsequent trees seem to harden and saws take longer to cut through the trees.

I dunno about that first comment but trees definitely behave with what you could could call a "consciousness" even though they're just wood. The way that they can grow in ways that don't impede on other trees and objects around them is cool as hell.

Alittle thought experiment

in the Sonic the Hedgehog series it talks about an animal that frees other animals from "robotic" control

the further said animal goes he(she?) ends up inside the robot itself in the air and finally in space to fight a lone person who is responsible for the robot overlording

upon getting back to "angel" island you see them celebrating around crystals (and not the cheeseburger kind unfortunately)
