First off, pac stans :whoa:, it's a classic record.
But does anyone think its disrespectful to half of the cats he named? Them 80's cats were competitive as all hell and they thrive off being the best. Some random nikka that was only 3 years younger than them coming out with a song pretty much crowning them with the :flabbynsick: must have been a poisoned chalice for them, despite it being a song appreciating their impact.
I can easily see cats like LL, Kane, Rakim (All 26 at the time) thinking " :childplease:, negro please, I ain't done yet" :pachaha:
To put it into context, Kane, Ra and them were all younger than these "New generation" rappers like Wale, Kendrick, Cole and Drake. Imagine some slightly younger rapper like Rich home quan making a song about Drake and em and calling them old school :mjlol:

In this context, considering most of those nikkas were under 30, do you think it was a disrespectful song?

LOL I was just thinking about that when the song came up on my playlist the other day.

this nikka was really shouting out cats who were still doing music and were at the peak of their popularity. it was a little bit disrespectful.

btw, anyone who says Pac is a LA nikka at heart should listen to this song. this was the epitome of a NYC joint.

Yeah somebody who was older needs to explain that shyt to me. That song came out in 95 and Pac was talking about 88 like it was ages ago. I know mid 90's rap and late 80's sound completely different but :pachaha: Pac was only 3 years younger than them duded

I see what you're saying but back in those days if you were 26 you were considered an old head in hip hop...It was a youth driven culture until the corporations got a strangle hold on it...

Jay-Z and Master P "making it" in their late 20's because of their business acumen was a start of the evolution...

lol, that's an interesting take.

I think it may have come off as him sayin they :flabbynsick: because he was reminiscing on his own youth and when he was just a fan listening to their music, goin to their shows, Pac made growing up in NYC sound fun as hell on that song.

As for the other comment I think he was both NY and LA. Anyone that comes from somewhere and has an extended stay in LA will fall in love with the place it's that great. To Live and die in LA was real fukkin talk cuz I got to experience it for myself. Plus Pac himself said if he had to choose a place he'd rep the Bay.

he's a cali transplant dukes. he was born and raised and NY, and called himself MC New York. He rejected NYC after all that bullshyt with badboy, mobb deep, haitian jack, and jimmy henchmen. if all that beef didn't happen, best believe Pac would have never tried to rep cali.

I think Old School was more of a reference to the sound. You have to remember, back then you could be an OG at 25 years old :wow:

But he already repped the Bay....and he already lived in B-More for years after living in NYC. He's not the first Cali transplant to make that state their home. :ld:

I hear you breh. When you think about it though, in most other professions other than sports (and music), most people don't blossom in their careers till their late 20's (hell-more so in their 30's) so Rap was an outlier in that respect.
It probably is why a lot of those dudes weren't able to manage their careers well. Will said he was broke within two years of his first album, Nas went broke too. Don't know how Ra and Kane fared but I'm pretty sure they made some questionable decisions too with their finances, anyway, that's for another thread.

But yeah, would love to know what those cats really thought back then. I'm almost 100% sure LL wasn't having that "old school let's celebrate them kumbaya" shyt..nikka was a battle fiend and probably recorded a diss to Pac somewhere :pachaha:
