Ramaphosa wins. :blessed: Good for South Africa. If NDZ won it would be on the path to becoming the next Zim. Get the Guptas outta here!

The top 6 is mixed though, half of them are supposedly Zuma loyalists- Mabuza, Duarte and Ace. He is probably the 1st Venda President of the ANC which is something given their numbers. Businesses will like him and the left will have an ideological opponent they could have hoped for

Can someone please break down the brief significance of this for outsiders?

It may mean that South Africa's rand currency won't suffer a down-grade to 'junk' status. That would help South Africa's with its impending debt crisis. Ramaphosa's victory might also bolster ANC fortunes in the upcoming South African general elections in 2019. Jacob Zuma, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma's ex husband, is thought as very corrupt and basically sold out the country to this Indian family called the Gupta's. Dlamini-Zuma might've protected her ex-husband from prosecution.

Cyril Ramaphosa - unionist to boss

It's important to note that South African leftists may not like Ramaphosa's victory, as it may mean more neoliberalism
He was Mandela's choice but Mbeki got voted in supported by ANCYL, SACP and others. It may be paralysis given the different ideologies present. Zuma also declared free college during the conference and he is going to inherit that as well.

I'm a bit clueless on my SA politics modern-day; is there any party that is near to being able to challenge the ANC, or is SA still a one-party state, effectively?

I know that Jacob Zuma was awful for the country, but sadly, that's about all I was keeping up with over the past few years.
