"Vince McMahon Wanted Ron Simmons To Be A Crip"
April 1, 2016 | Posted by Jeremy Thomas

Normally, interviews of WWE Legends during Wrestlemania week are filled with romanticized nostalgia and ego boosting (We’re looking at you Bret Hart). But former WCW Heavyweight Champion, Ron Simmons, recent interview with the guys over at the Kick Punch Slam podcast was anything but. During the 20 minute interview Simmons made several, never before heard revelations about his time in the WWE. The most shocking of which, was that Vince McMahon (Yes, that Vince McMahon) wanted Simmons to portray a Crip gang member on TV.

While discussing his brutal debut in the WWE as Farooq Asad, (If you’ve never seen this before please don’t Youtube it, you’ve been warned) the gladiator managed by Sunny, (Yes, that Sunny) Simmons discussed his distaste for the character. “Man it was awful and I knew it was awful, but I had to get my foot in the door. I mean just look at Steve he came in as the damn Ringmaster, and went on to make millions.” When asked about trying to change the character Simmons made a startling revelation. The transcript of this part of the interview is posted below:

“I had talked to Vince about wanting to go in a new direction with the character, so we set up a meeting at TV. When I got into Vince’s office he had an all blue get up laid out on his desk. I mean everything was blue; the tights, the boots, the du-rag, the shades. Everything. And then Vince pitched me his idea of making me a Crip. He had already made up his mind on having me feud with Ahmed, and since Ahmed wore red he thought he could make our feud gang related. You have to remember at that time gangsta rap was huge, and it was everywhere. But Vince wanted me to dress like a damn Smurf. I don’t think he’s ever actually seen a gang member in his life. At one part he started telling me about how if the WWF wanted to compete they were going to have to go after the guys that listened to Tupac & Snoopy The Doggy Dogg. Once again, I don't think Vince had any idea who those guys were because when he played me a sample of the music he wanted me to use it sounded like a Kool And The Gang cover band”

“I tried my best to stay composed during all this because it was even more ridiculous than it probably sounds, but the best part in the story is the name that Vince came up with. I don’t know if it was him or Pat, but they wanted to call me Big Homie Ronnie Ron. When he told me that I laughed in his face and told him the idea was BS. That’s when they scrapped that idea and started putting the Nation Of Domination together.”

So yeah, Vince wanted two black guys to engage in gang warfare on national TV.
