His two most popular songs of all-time are Hey Ya' and Ms. Jackson, two songs where he wasn't really flexing any lyrical dexterity when it came down to pure bars. Andre wasn't born to be a rapper - it happened to be something he did en route to pursuing his true passions in R&B and Funk.

But in the same vein as artists like Prince, George Clinton, and Jimi, I think Andre deserves props for the way he bent genres to create defining popular music. The fact that his most defining contributions to hip-hop are relatively buried in Outkast's discography is proof that rapping was a part-time gig for Mr. 3 Stacks.

Also - I get the irony that he doesn't have any solo material and has a legitimate claim for GOAT status, but I think the irony adds to the mystique. This dude was a full-time rapper for less than a decade, start to finish.

He was a savant, and I often wonder what he could have delivered on a solo level when he was dialed-in at his peak. But like other greats, perhaps his non-linear thought patterns and laissez faire approach to committing to his craft afforded him the creative space to deliver the legendary music we all know today.

Andre is the rap game Barry Sanders. If you were there, you were lucky to get a front-row seat. But it was gone as quickly as it arrived. And we often wonder what could have been, but sometimes it's nice seeing your heroes go out on top.

None of this makes sense. Nobody's exactly born to rap. For Andre 3000, like every other rapper, rapping was a hobby or a pastime that developed into a passion that he saw could pay the bills. Nothing more nothing less. As time progressed, he and Big Boi picked up production and learned instruments, which allowed them to develop their sound further than just being MC's. They started singing ("Liberation") with Andre doing it more so than Big Boi. With time, Andre became bored with rap and found it easier to express himself through singing rather than rapping. He NEVER wanted to be rapping into his 30's or 40's, which is evident in interviews from the Aquemini era.

Barry Sanders is easily the most skilled running back/player in NFL history and it's not close

Andre 3000 is a great but I don't think anyone thinks he's the most skilled ever.

3000 is more like Calvin Megatron Johnson, definitely top 20 but not 1 or 2 or 3, etc... and left way too early

shyt, you can definitely make an argument that Dre is the best ever as far as pure skill. I can see a good argument for either Nas, Dre, and Eminem and a few others in that category. Point being is that 3k is definitely in the discussion. Hold a gun to my head and I'd still hesitate to say someone like Nas is better than Dre when it comes to pure rapping ability. That says a lot about where 3k stands as I'm sure Nas is the probably the GOAT among people who care about pure creative lyricism.
