What most of us are saying is it's bullshyt to ignore those other factors. Yes there are a lot of people stuck in shytty positions due to lack of work ethic but to paint the picture that the only reason people aren't in the 1% is due not having a work ethic is ridiculous when there are so many other factors that go into including a little bit of luck. I'm far from a 1%er but living very comfortably. It took a lot of luck (combined with a lot of grinding on my end) to end up in my position and a lot of bad luck (and a misstep on my end) to not be in a more prosperous position. There are so many factors that determine success/failure that it's preposterous to narrow it down to strictly work ethic.

I've been on both ends of the spectrum from being the primary decision maker for a company bringing in 20+ million revenue a year as well as being the lowest man on the totem pole. They are definitely two completely different types of stress. When I was the man in charge I was in meetings all day long from meeting with salesmen, software developers, as well as the managers of the three departments I was directly responsible for. It looked like I was doing no work at all while mentally I was dying. The mental stress took over my mind outside of the job. But boy that paycheck made life so much easier. I'd easily take that over the stress of working as a support tech taking calls all day while being paid scraps and struggling to get by.

So unless you were raped, choices that THE INDIVIDUAL made play a part in their inability to achieve a desired level of success. There's a risk every time sex happens, USUALLY nothing happens but when it does that's the risk you should've known going in. Sex isn't a requirement to live, or even to live happily. Too often people refuse to understand any level of personal accountability. There's a reason the wealthy often seem mysteriously able to wait and have kids when they're prepared to.

But if we're really gonna play the family blame game; needing to provide for a family should actually provide increased motivation to go HARDER to ensure success since there are people now depending on you. Yes it might be harder to juggle career/family but harder isn't impossible. If you've already decided it's not possible then how can you expect any other outcome?
