Angelina Jolie undergoes double mastectomy - CNN.com

Actress Angelina Jolie announced in a New York Times op-ed article on Tuesday that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carries the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

:sadcam:
thats the story they are putting out the real reason she had em chopped is because now shes losing weight they are saggying. The director of the tourist couldnt even show her during a nude scene for the simple fact shes too skinny. Now when has angelina ever been bashful about nude scenes :rudy:

ps I always wonder about how dudes like david beckham and brad pitt can let their woman ruin their bodies to such an extent they look like teenage boys :scusthov:

She's a very courageous women. Knowing personally the bereavement that cancer leaves you with, from seeing beloved relatives loose their battles, I :salute: her from bringing awareness to her own ailment.

so let me get this straight....................she possesses a gene that MIGHT give her cancer.............and just throws her tittays in the bushes... :skip:

this is retarded.............................and 100s of thousands of women are going to repeat this nonsense... :to:

She had an 87% chance of getting cancer. Her mom died of cancer at 56. How is that stupid to be proactive for her children?

So in order for them to have discovered that particular gene (BRCA1 gene) I'm assuming they had to map her entire genome, correct?

and that can cost anywhere between 3 to 4 thousand dollars.......

Every American citizen should have access to these test/screens, but we live in a capitalistic nation where $$ comes before health and education so it will probably never be available to the general public at a reasonable price any time soon. And between now and then many lives will be lost when those deaths could have been prevented

Good ol demonic Capitalism killing folks again :salute:

Great post about the larger implications of a story like this, and the deadly consequences of income inequality, and our lack of a comprehensive health care system that provides for all. This thread is a pretty good gauge on who the idiots are around here who only concern themselves with thier personal wishes, and superficial concerns.

So when other women....especially young women find out they have this same gene...they might as well cut them mammaries off...in anticipation they MIGHT get breast cancer?? is that what you saying.....

Once this "gene screen" for lack of a better phrase becomes cheaper and more ubiquitous....people will be finding out they MIGHT get this or that genetic disorder or be prone for this or that............Insurance companies are going to be salivating to have this info........................

So if a 23 year old women gets this "gene screen" tests and find out she has the same potential as A. Jolie....she might as might as well cut them off right???? that's not retarded???

So what would you suggest? An 87% chance. That means she had a 17% chance of not getting cancer. With those odds, how can you call her decision retarded?

She's now reduced her chances from 87% to under 5%.

I apologize for the using "retarded"........ the test is interesting, will be a great for people that can have an idea of what they may be susceptible for..... and may also give me people the push they neecd to live healtheir lifestyles to possibly reduce chances of genetic conditions occuring .....these are good things, not denying that........of course the insurance companies also thinks this is a good thing, and licking their chops at the prospect of knowing your genetic profile......

But my question/comment/scenario is again..... if a 23 old woman finds out she has the same gene as Angeline Jolie........is it sensible for her to remove her breasts at age of 23 or even at Angelina Jolie's age now......

This is the ethical question I'm posing??? ... to each their own, but I see a movement of women removing their breasts way to early ...... if they tell you that you have an 80% chance of getting this particular breast cancer some time in the future and you are 23 years old....is it sensible to follow what A. Jolie has done at 23??
