Takeover was plotted out. Jay strung Nas along. Lyrics already written. Supa Ugly on the other hand was reactive and rushed.

I don't think Jay was expecting Nas to come so hard (no homo) with Ether. (I still think Ether is on some childhood playground bullying lyrics wise and doesn't hold up against Takeover)

So instead of laying low, regrouping, and coming back with something worthy...he released Supa Ugly.

He had another year to write Blueprint 2 and that wasn't any better. All he did is cry and beg people to like him.

I know I'm in the 40% minority but I have always felt Jay won, although Nas definetly came out a winner due to the fact of where his career was (Nastradamus, horrible) before the battle versus the glory he got after it. Too many suspect lines in Ether. It obviously had Jay in his feelings though lol. When he said it was "vulgar" I was like uhhh yeah niqqa it's a diss record. Still think Nas got a HUGE pass when he turned down a face to face battle. At the end of the day though, even if Jay lost this one, hey, its fukkin NAS.

I’m literally getting ready to announce the winner when I look into the hallway of the station and see Jay Z walking into my studio. “And the winner is ‘Ether.’” I had to deliver Jay that blow while he was standing right there.
To say he was uncomfortable is an understatement.


I couldn’t really figure out why he’d agreed to be interviewed in this moment. But evidently he had been under pressure. Like I said, a lot of people felt he had gone too far. Though I was happy that Nas won this poll I always felt it would have been different it was Takeover vs Ether cause I didn't know that it was vs Superugly till years later.
