I'm not missing anything. I chose to take up issue with your statements on engineering and bachelor's degrees in general, rather than the initial focus on the homework paper.
The question on the paper was basic arithmetic, but I agree with the father's note that it's a lot simpler and more straightforward without all the number line common core stuff thrown in.
If I claimed I conducted an "extensive" study of history in my undergraduate work I'd be bullshytting too. That was my original point; the parent using his basic degree in an attempt to comes off as some math wizard is lame. Also, if I stopped at a bachelors I'd probably be landscaping right now.
don't be a teacher if you don't want the government writing your lesson plans for you?

I think there's a lot of old dogs not wanting to learn new tricks. Our education system was going in the wrong direction quite frankly a change needed to be made...not that this was the right change but I'd rather them chance a change and fail then stick to the same path and get the known results out of that path.

That's the problem. Teachers were just expected to pick it up. Now, some teachers see it as their professional responsibility to figure it out, others aren't going to do shyt unless they're paid....typical union mentality.read page 2. Another problem is that they just jammed these new standards in, which are meant to build on each other from 1st grade to 12th, and expect immediate results. Fundamental change like this takes time. Teacher's need to be allowed to break a few eggs, so to speak, before mastering it. We won't really be able to judge their effectiveness until a class is taught by them from beginning to end. Clearly, America isn't patient enough for that though, so this circle jerk will continue.
