An online video shows an officer apparently punching a man while trying to arrest him during a traffic stop in the Bronx Sunday.
The NYPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is reviewing the incident, in which Timothy Nelson, 24, was dragged from his car after he was pulled over for making an illegal U-turn at E. 229 Street and Laconia Avenue in Edenwald, police said.
Cops said Nelson had been double-parked before making the illegal U-Turn and several other turns without using a signal.
The video,
posted on YouTube the day of the incident, begins as an officers pulls Nelson from the car. It was not immediately clear what preceded the altercation.
As three officers take Nelson to the ground, one officer in a T-shirt and shorts is seen apparently punching Nelson, though the officer’s hands are obscured in the video.
Nelson remains obstructed except for his legs during that section of the recording.
“Ya’ll is punching me on the face, what did I do to deserve this,” Nelson can be heard yelling. The criminal complaint filed in Bronx court said Nelson flailed his arms as cops tried to cuff him.
Nelson was charged with resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana - cops found a baggie of pot in his front pocket, according to the criminal complaint.
During the scuffle, several bystanders gathered around the officers as the cops demanded they stay back, the video shows.
One officer knocks a phone from a woman’s hand as she appears to be filming the melee.
Nelson appears to stiffen as cops try to put him in the back of the police cruiser, as at least ten more officers respond to the scene and move the crowd back.
