I"m not hatin on Quik. I'm just sayin you dudes need to come back down to earth. I would love to see my local rapper blow
Who is talking about Quik as a rapper? Dude's rap career as far as relevancy goes ended like nearly 20 years ago, maybe 17 or something.
As a true producer, quik is amongst the greatest hip hop producers... I don't even care about the dude that much as a solo artist. And I am not even in love with his 'style'. Just saying music wise, he is one of the few dudes who can say let me take a break and loop it and make it hot, let me take a sample and take parts and make it hot and add a drum machine, let me take a keyboard and a drum machine and make it hot, let me take 6 live musicians and make it hot. he can also be like, let me make a straight hip hop record, let me make a straight r & b record, let me make a straight POP record (meaning the sound pop not just a popular hip hop record), let me make a straight jazz record. Also he can go find unknown talent, and produce for them, as he has done a couple times. And he has reinvented his sound a couple times, quik was the one of the original dudes who popularized the talk box in west coast hip hop, and he was one of the pioneers of that high pitched synthesizer whine over super heavy funk bass that was the westcoast style back in the early 90s, he was one of the originators of that tin-y pitch shifty agogo sound that was all over west coast records. Which is all to say through out the course of his career he hasnt been a local dude.
Now the number of hip hop producers who can fit in all those rolls is pretty limited. Rza, Pete Rock, Primo I love there style way more, but they havent shown the ability to take instruments and make records, to lead musicians to make records, or to produce outside of strict hip hop genre sound. Alchemist, Large Pro, Diamond D, etc havent shown the ability to make 'hits' either. Dre is a king at finding and perfecting a sound, at finding and grooming talent, at putting the right beat makers and artists together and turning raw talent into great music and hit records. But Dre has not in his career been known as a dude to go to a studio and just make music by himself, that aint a diss, or a claim of ghost producers, just talking facts.
Very few hip hop producers can handle all the various angles of producer the way quik can... probably jermaine dupri is the other and maybe just blaze although just hasnt shown the ability to find and groom new artists...
