He gave up any custodial and visitation rights. But his legal obligations as a parent cannot be terminated just because thats what he wants. It is very rare for a parents rights/obligations to be terminated. Courts don't like to do that. Best way to get it done would be for another dude to simultaneously adopt the kid, therefore the child would always have a legal father.

Crazy a women can give her child up for adoption and not be legally binded by it
