What influences your blind belief?

Because ive never been dead before so i have no idea what the truth is. I did work in a hospice when i was in high school and the things that happen to people right before they die made me believe there is something out there.

They see me trolling, they hating.....
Born and raised a Cristian literalist (someone who believed everything in the bible was fact and the word of God)

However no inquiring mind can remain religious for too long. Eventually you will hit that wall and have to break through it in order to obtain answers to the questions religion just didn't have (or had and lied about)

The only people who remain christian literalist throughout their entire lifetime are the intellectually handicapped.

I recommend that everyone atleast take a glance at this lecture by Richard Carrier (mainly christians, theres no point in preaching to the choir)

I was raised as a Christian. Mother is old school Jamaican so being in the church all the time was common. I spent my younger years in Catholic school. I guess what sparked my change was just an observation of the world around me. As I got older, and learned more about different ideologies I found myself feeling more neutral than anything else. This was over the course of about 5 or 6 years. I started to feel like religion was more of a dividing factor among society as opposed to a unifying one. So many people unable to be accepting of a different point of view. As a result, I disassociated myself with any form of organized religion and now consider myself an agnostic. It's rough because being black, and not believing can leave you ostracized on so many fronts.

I cosign this, as I have been thinking the same thing. Organized religion seems to enforce discrimination contrary to its teachings. Unfortunately, believers believe that their discrimination is acceptable since god is made out to be a discriminating entity (which contradicts the concept of perfection and god being perfect).

Another thing I'd like to mention is that you could be an agnostic atheist or even an agnostic theist. You stating that "not believing" warrants ostracism implies that you are the former -- an agnostic atheist; disbelieving, yet skeptical.

Lastly, if you think it's rough being Black and doubtful or without belief, imagine being mixed, homosexual, and an agnostic atheist (like me). People discriminate against me as if I'm the epitome of wrongness. Lol.

I wasn't aware of the term agnostic atheist. I'll have to look into it. The crazy thing is my family still doesn't know I don't believe anymore. Whenever I go home for the holidays there's always a million questions about why I don't want to go to service with them. Fortunately being 26, they can't really make me anyway.

Its important that members of our society aren't teaching their kids mythical nonsense parading as fact that will contradict anything they learn in a science related field if they one day decide to pursue an advanced degree. The more scientifically literate a society is the better.

It's all about the kids breh

:manny:

and Muslims aren't pussies and will chop your head off instead of debate with you and look stupid like christians do, that's why.

Would u provoke a mad man?

I was atheist for a short time, but I was raised christian (methodist) and was very involved in the church as a child. I'm pantheist now.

This tom dude is one of those annoying atheists....

I call myself exploring religions right now.

I was raised Christian and my mom is straight out of a Medea movie with her faith. As an adult I just started to realize that basically all religions are damn near the same and I just can't truly believe with my adult mind in the concept of religion (i.e. God needed an enemy so he let the devil do his thing :heh:)

But as of lately I've been researching other religions (Buddhism, Islam among others) to see if I relate to another one. I've been saying forever it is impossible to establish faith in one religion if you haven't checked out the other ones.

Back to OP's topic, as an adult I just grew up and saw the holes of religion. Religion is truly meant to either control people, promote morality, or to ease the pain and uncertainty of death. As I myself am not very religious anymore, if religion and faith gives people hope who am I to tell them it's wrong :manny:
