I think whether you'll enjoy the HBCU experience comes down to how much research you do on the institution, what you major in, and what kind of person you are.
I did my college bid at Howard in the early 2000's. I thought it was gonna be the same vibe and hype as what I heard and saw of Howard in the 90's. Not quite. The vibe was sorta like a SMACK DVD meets Teen Summit, which wasn't all bad. But by the time I graduated it was straight up 106 & Park with mad soft Terrance J type cats and OD bougie jawns everywhere.
I majored in engineering, which was no-no. Not sure how the program is now but everything we were learning was out of date and technology was antiquated. When you're young and thuggin it doesn't seem like a big deal but once I graduated and started working around these cacs I saw just how far behind I was. But then again, I know people who majored in business and communications there and they came out of school eating lovely. Also, being an engineering major there gave me plenty of time to strive, but no time to prosper (see: holla at these jawns). So my social life wasn't all it could've been.
It was cool meeting black people from all over the country and world. You really see how diverse the spectrum is. However, I was soon over it. My pops was pretty much godbody/moor, my high school was 50/50 black/white, and I grew up in a city that's majority black. So the novelty of being around a whole rack of nukkas wore off quickly for me. For those who grew up around less black folk, they seem to have loved it. Also, don't let the name fool you, things were disorganized as all hell.
Yet and still, would I do it all over again? Sure, if I picked a different major. Engineering there really messed me up. smdh.
