*sigh* There I was on my way to a nice, quiet career in public librarianship when I got presented with an offer I couldn't refuse from a local charter school. Now I'm back in the classroom as an early childhood reading interventionist. (I teach middle school on Saturdays).

I still can't believe I signed up to do this on purpose. Teaching feels like the Mafia sometimes. You're in it for life, and that's exactly what this world wants from you, too...life. And boy, oh boy, anybody who thinks that teaching younger children is "easier" has never stared down second graders. This shyt is about to threaten my sobriety, and I don't even drink!!!!!

Annnnnnyway. I know I'm no the only one hiding in the teacher's lounge reading the Coli while choking down my lukewarm lunch during my so-called "break". Where dem teachers at? Principals? Professors? Shoutout to our hardworking paraprofessionals and aides, who never get the pay that they are due!

I've been an adjunct instructor at a university for 8 years? Not my full-time gig though

What's the pay for that, if you don't mind my asking? (And what subject?) My ultimate goal was to become a community college professor, but this wound up in my path first. As fukked up as the charter school systems are, I'm fairly convinced that I'll make assistant principal - oops, I mean headmistress - w/i five years.

Might want to check TLR. I know some had posted in the thread about the Cali graduation rates.

High school teacher here.

What subject, breh?

And, you're right...elementary is waaayyy harder. I could never...
Respect...

I miss middle school so much. Riffing on my girls, listening to their problems, putting a beach ball in their hands when they started clapping like circus seals when they talked. They were dramatic as fukk, though. It was like an extra-long episode of David Makes Man every...damn...day. But the little ones...they're clingy, they STAY snitchin' on other, and they're always crying about the whuppin they just got or they're about to get. I love 'em dearly, but...sheesh.

When I used to actually instruct regularly, 1500 a class. 750 every month. 2.5 hours of instruction a class per week.

Now, I'm primarily a tutor and curriculum builder. Same school. I have 2 classes that I'm assigned to tutor till the end of the year. Each class is 400. This was the first week, I logged in on my phone, no one showed up. I set my classes up back to back on Thursday so I was at the crib playing video games and made a quick 100 bucks over 2 hours.

I have the autonomy to do more or less whatever because of my tenure there. 8 years is a long time. What you are looking for appears to desire more of a permanent situation than what I have. However, if I can help, by all means, I will.

I teach at a university but I’m still working on the PhD. I’d rather work at a smaller or community college because I don’t want to tapdance for tenure. Don’t even really want to focus on writing, just let me lecture and teach

I concur. It's why being an adjunct has been a great thing for me to do. Get in, get out. As I've grown in my career, the money from school has moved from being a need to mostly wants. I'm about get have my ps5/next Xbox money fully set aside at the end of the year.

i'm currently in an advanced program designed for non-education majors to obtain certification to become teachers. Compared to the countless temp jobs and labor positions I've had for ten plus years, and how the program itself is too easy for me, I'm worried about how effective the prep is when i do obtain certification and actually get into the classroom.

weird though; i have a few friends that are teachers. One does art, with his focus on ceramics and painting, and things are well for him. Another one taught at the elite high school she used to attend and is now currently at a private school in Indonesia. Few others grinding it out in the hood schools, and i figure i might be at those as a first year.

No matter, I'm committed and I appreciate y'all sharing your perspectives on this
