Any Coli pitbull owners??

Say brehs, it's a 3 year old at the shelter I have been checking out recently. I have never had any affinity for pit bulls but she's seemed to take a liking to me and my girlfriend, very mild mannered and affectionate. Medium sized (45-50 lbs) and very strong. I have been doing my homework on the breed since I have never owned one, how risky a proposition would it be to buy one without knowing their parents history, or much about their living situation before coming to the shelter? I called my mom up the other day she basically said

@Primetime21 i did it and aside from having to work with :dog: on being leash reactive regularly when he gets barked at by other dogs (mostly due to his cropped ears) he is a very sweet little boy. he is affectionate with all people and especially babies. my main issue is that he is very rambunctious and doesn't know his own strength. but i love my shelter dog a lot. the most important thing is to show your dog a lot of love, keep your training consistent (both you and your GF giving the dog a treat everytime it does something right), and exercise the hell out of your dog. two walks a day at least for 30+ minutes and then extra exercise in your yard or in the park. an ignored, anxious dog is the kind of dog you will have problems with.

oh we bought a house in december so bubba has a yard now. he got in a scrap with a groundhog yesterday

same thing with the girl im lookin at, the previous owner had cropped her ears. Last time I was at the shelter I took her for a walk she was cool but seems like she may not be too dog friendly I'm in no rush to decide but definitely will continue to think about it.

I have an adopted female. She was and still is a great dog. She listens well. But is very skittish. We later found out she was a bait dog when she was younger and is very dog aggressive. Well not so much aggressive. But she never was taught how to play, and all she knows is when a dog play bites her, she reacts negatively. She's insanely submissive to us though. Being over submissive to humans is a sign of abuse.

Pit Bull is not a breed. It's a group of breeds and mixes of them. Like a general term. The APBT is a purebred breed, but most of what's on the street and shelters aren't proper APBT's. But anyway, this type of dog will never die out. They are fukkin' survivors. I walk dogs at a shelter near me and it's like 85% Pit Bulls, many of whom have been abused, bred poorly and neglected, but unlike the other breeds which come in, they are almost all still affectionate and like people. They are way too hardy, trendy (unfortunately,) and impressive (physically/athletically, temperament/drive,) to ever be allowed to die out. A properly bred APBT is like the apex dog breed.

I definitely agree that the Trashy element of society has done horrific damage to the image and gene-pool of these still great dogs though.

It's a big rotation. First it was Shepard and rotties. And I disagree to a extent. Most of these "pitbulls" you see nowadays are mixed am bullys. Nothing pure breed. They look like fukking pot belly pigs.

Exactly. I have a pure breed and non pure and it's a world of a difference.

My coworker has a Boxer/American Bulldog mix. Yet the thing is 100% misidentified as a "Big Ass Pit," by every person on the street. If it ever hurt someone i am entirely confident it would be reported and listed as a "Pit Bull attack." Meanwhile my friend had a 39 pound Sorrells bred APBT from Tatonka Kennels, and most people we met when walking it thought it was a mutt - cause it didn't weigh 90 pounds and had an athletic wirey build. Most people will call anything a Pit Bull nowadays.

100% truth. My pure pit is that way. People will come up and pet her, then it'll be what kind of dog is she, "apbt". And they just totally change there attitude and back away. They always think she's under a year because she's not 90 lb pot belly pig looking thing.
